A New Hotel Honoring Silverton’s Past and Supporting Its Future

Silverton, Colorado, is a place where history feels alive. Its rugged charm, mining legacy, and breathtaking mountain landscapes create a unique sense of timelessness—a town where every corner tells a story. In 2022, I visited Silverton for the first time and was immediately captivated by its character. What began as a simple trip evolved into something much larger: the development of a boutique hotel designed to honor Silverton’s heritage while thoughtfully supporting its future.
This blog marks the beginning of documenting the journey behind this forthcoming hotel on Main Street—a project rooted in community input, respect for history, and a vision for sustainable growth.

Silverton: A Town Steeped in History

Silverton’s story began during the gold and silver rushes of the late 19th century. As miners flocked to the San Juan Mountains in search of fortune, the town grew into a bustling hub filled with saloons, boarding houses, and supply stores. Over time, Silverton became known for its resilience—a quality that remains central to its identity today.

When mining operations ceased in the 1990s, Silverton faced a crossroads. The town shifted its focus to tourism, leveraging its National Historic Landmark status, Victorian architecture, and access to outdoor adventures like hiking, fishing, and skiing. Today, Silverton stands at another inflection point: balancing preservation with progress as new opportunities emerge from outdoor recreation trends and remote work possibilities.

The forthcoming hotel is designed to reflect this balance—not by imposing change but by thoughtfully integrating into what makes Silverton special. It aims to enhance what’s already here while creating spaces that meet evolving needs for both visitors and locals.

Listening to the Community

When I purchased the site on Main Street in 2022, I didn’t have a clear plan for what it would become. What I did have was an appreciation for Silverton’s character and a desire to contribute something meaningful. Over time—through attending town meetings, studying the master plan, and listening to locals—I began to understand how my background in hospitality could align with the town’s goals.

Silverton’s master plan highlighted several areas where thoughtful development could make a difference:

  • Lodging: A need for more high-quality accommodations to support tourism while respecting the scale of the town
  • Food Options: More accessible dining choices for both visitors and residents
  • Community Spaces: Year-round programming like events and workshops that bring people together

This feedback shaped the vision for the hotel:

  • Thoughtful Hospitality: Spacious rooms with kitchenettes designed for extended stays or remote work weekends—a nod to Silverton’s appeal among adventure-seekers
  • Community Programming: A ground-floor space dedicated to events like live music nights, chef-led dinners, workshops, and gatherings open to locals as well as guests
  • Accessible Dining: Affordable grab-and-go meals offering fresh options for residents during quieter seasons
The goal is not just to create a place for visitors but also to enhance everyday life for those who call Silverton home, like I do.

Honoring Heritage Through Design

Silverton’s identity is deeply tied to its mining roots—the timber-framed structures, the raw beauty of its surroundings, and the stories etched into its mountainsides. This hotel seeks to honor these roots while embracing sustainable practices that look toward the future:

  • Material Choices: Mass timber construction recalls historic mining structures while supporting environmental sustainability goals outlined in Silverton’s master plan
  • Architectural Inspiration: The building design reflects industrial-era aesthetics while incorporating modern elements suited for today’s needs
  • Interior Design Philosophy: Minimalist interiors highlight nature rather than competing with it—creating spaces that feel connected to Silverton’s landscape
This approach ensures that the hotel complements Silverton’s character rather than overshadowing it.

A Gateway to Silverton

The hotel isn’t just about creating a place to stay—it’s about creating an experience that connects guests with everything Silverton has to offer. From heli-skiing on Silverton Mountain to hiking trails that wind through ghost towns and alpine lakes, this project is designed as a gateway into all that makes this town extraordinary. At the same time, it will provide spaces where visitors can relax and reconnect—whether through enjoying local cuisine crafted from Colorado-grown ingredients or unwinding after an adventure-filled day.

For locals, it will offer more than lodging—it will be a place where community connections are fostered through shared events and accessible dining options.

Looking Ahead

This blog is just the beginning of documenting this journey—from design challenges like working within narrow lots and adhering to strict building codes to celebrating milestones with an incredible team of architects, designers, engineers, and community partners. Future posts will dive deeper into topics like Silverton’s history (next month), sustainable building practices, and how this project aims to serve both locals and visitors alike.

This forthcoming hotel represents more than just lodging; it symbolizes how thoughtful development can honor heritage while supporting community needs. As we continue this journey together with Silverton’s community at heart, we invite you to follow along—and share your thoughts—because this project is as much about preserving what makes Silverton special as it is about embracing what comes next.

Stay tuned for next month’s post: “Silverton Through Time: Exploring Its Mining Heritage.”
